E brevemente mi rispose il cambiavalute:
A parole non si parla d’amore,
D’amore si sospira solo furtivamente,
E gli occhi, come zaffiri, risplendono.

Il bacio non ha nomi, non ne ha,
La parola bacio non si incide sulle bare.
I baci spirano profumi di rosa rossa,
Sciogliendosi come petali sulle labbra.

All’amore non si chiedono giuramenti,
Con l’amore si conoscono gioia e sventura.
“Tu sei mia” lo possono dire solo le mani,
Che hanno strappato il nero ciadòr.

Nowadays I asked a money-changer
Who exchanges half toman for ruble,
`How to say it, in the Persian language,
The sweet words for Lala, “I love you!”

Nowadays I asked the money-changer,
Easier than wind o`er the smooth Van,
How can I name it, me, a stranger,
The endearing word of “kiss” for Lala? Ah!

Then I also asked the money-changer,
Keeping back my shyness deep at heart,
How to confide, how to adventure
To declare love of Lala, call her “mine”.

Thus the money-changer spake compactly,
What the use of words when one`s in love?
When in love one only sighs abruptly,
And one`s eyes like diamonds twinkle bright.

Just as well a kiss has no title,
Since a kiss is no epitaths.
Kisses winnow as a red rose, scarlet
Petals of the kisses melt in mouths.

There betides in love both woe and gladness.
Love is not what is released on bail.
`You are mine` can only say your hands that
Once tore off the ebony Moslem veil.
